Solar Panel Removal and Reinstall When the Roof Is Replaced

When a roof needs replacing and the solar system still has years of life, the panels have to come off and go back on. This is called detach and reset. The panels, racking and wiring are taken down, labelled, stored safely, and reinstalled on the new roof once the roofer is done.

Timing is the part that goes wrong most often. The panels cannot go back until the new roof is complete and cured, and the system stays off in the meantime, so every extra day is lost production. Booking the solar crew and the roofer together, with dates that line up, keeps the gap short.

A reinstall is also a chance to fix small problems. New flashing goes under each mount, old connectors can be swapped, and the system is tested before it is switched back on. In many places the reinstall needs its own permit and a utility notice, which the quote should account for.

What the work includes

  • Coordination of dates with your roofing contractor
  • Reinstallation of racking with new flashing and sealed attachments
  • Reconnection of wiring, inverter and monitoring
  • Testing of each string and a full system performance check
  • Permit and utility notification where the local rules require them

What changes the price

Number of panels
More panels take more labour to remove, store and reinstall.
Roof type
Tile, slate and metal roofs need different attachment details and often more time.
Storage needs
Panels left on site cost less to handle than those moved to storage.
Racking condition
Corroded or damaged parts may need replacing instead of reusing.
Permits and inspection
Many areas require a permit and an inspection on reinstall.
Coordination with the roofer
Delays on the roofing side can extend the time the system is down.

What a good quote spells out

  • Who is responsible for any damage to panels during removal, storage and reinstall
  • How flashing and roof penetrations are handled with the roofing contractor's work
  • Whether any mounting parts are replaced as part of the price
  • An estimate of how many days the system will be offline
  • Permit and utility steps for the reinstall

Panel Removal & Reinstall: questions people ask

Can solar panels be removed and put back on a new roof?

Yes. It is a normal job when the roof needs replacing before the solar system reaches the end of its life.

How long are solar panels off during a re-roof?

It depends on the roof and the weather. A typical house may take a week or two end to end, but the schedule is set by the roofer and the permits.

Should the roof be replaced before installing solar?

If the roof has less than ten or so years left, replacing it first usually saves money. Taking panels off later adds a separate cost.

Does reinstalling panels affect their warranty?

Handling can affect warranty terms if panels are damaged. Ask who is responsible for the panels while they are down, and get it in writing.
